Connection to Mom

When young soldiers die on the field of battle, before they die, they very often cry out to their mothers. Sometimes if they can, they scratch out a short letter to their mother before they leave this life. Mothers have a bond with their offspring unlike any other connection. Husbands and wives have a unique bond ordained by God, but a person forms inside his mother to the degree that the child is part of her. I’ve witnessed this firsthand in many different occasions and of several different families. I’ve seen it and it’s strong.

The perpetuation of the human race proceeds through a woman’s painful traversal of nine months, while her descendant develops into her marvelous and wonderful baby. When she and hopefully a father looks down at this person for the first time, she swells with love and affection. It doesn’t stop there as a mother feeds, burps, changes, holds, comforts, protects, and instructs.

God designed this union. Very shortly within the biblical book of wisdom, Proverbs 1:8 says, “Forsake not the law of thy mother.” Solomon testifes later in Proverbs 4:3, “For I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.” On the other hand, “A foolish son is the heaviness of his mother” (Proverbs 10:1).

Mothers can, do, and should change the world. It’s a great role and one worthy of respect. I thank mothers today, including my mother, wife, and daughter, and especially the mothers of our church and churches of like faith and practice. May mothers continue raising children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord and for the glory of God.
